In 1992 DJ Katsuya, one half of Nature Soul, made his first visit to New
York to experience the real dance music scene. Fired up by his musical
experiences, he absorbed himself in all things house music upon his return
to Tokyo. His popularity in Japan continues to grow ten years later. His
first release for Alfa Records in 1996 "SOLARIS" (Raw Material
#1) features a collaboration with famous jazz keyboardist, Masabumi Kikuchi.
This crossover jazz-house cut gained wide respect in Japan and overseas.
In 2001 he started a new house project called Nature Soul with keyboardist,
Shin. One of their earliest tracks, "Dawn" was featured on Space
Lab Yellow (Phase 1). Their follow-up "River Benue" appears
on Phase 2. Ibadan will release a full Nature Soul EP in the fall including
new titles as well as alternate mixes of these tracks.
Katsuya
has played at leading Japanese venues such as The Bank, Picasso, Cave,
Maniac Love, Core, Womb, Harlem and Space Lab Yellow alongside legendary
US DJs and performers Joe Claussell, Loletta Holloway and Kenny Bobien,
to name but a few. He has held a monthly residency at Hi-Life, Space Lab
Yellow in Tokyo for 4 years and is recognized as being one of Japan's
top house DJs.
